Current Obsessions - The Violin Maker
Lately I've been obsessed with the profession of violin making. If you haven't seen it yet, this is a beautiful short film profile of New York-based luthier Sam Zygmuntowicz, the premiere installment of director Dustin Cohen's popular video series Made In Brooklyn.
Inspiring as it is, last night I bought a pocket knife and covered my stoop with wood shavings---that is until the ravenous Texan mosquitoes caught wind of my blood-filled and manically still body. Even so, it's an itch I feel entirely justified to scratch.
Once it's done it's totally in action. It's a dynamic object—it's used by musicians actively—it's vibrating—it's changing. So, the violin, when it's completely assembled, it totally leaves that identity as something that's built or shaped, and becomes almost like a living thing.
